Introduction

Just for a moment imagine that, by being invited to create a labyrinth walk, you are invited to dance with powerful beings, angels or spirits. You will dance in a circle, of course, and move deep into then out of the center. The circle is a supreme image of wholeness, your wholeness, and the center is the circle's creator, the indwelling power that creates your world.

A sacred ritual is involved in the creation of the labyrinth. Whether you climb circling up to the summit of a ziggurat, circle around the dancing floor of Ariadne on Crete, or you descend into the underworld to defeat your demon, you participate in sacred ritual.

There is much that is elusive and mysterious about the effect of this pattern on different walkers. We all encounter what we bring to the walk, just as we do in life. That the inward turning spiral pattern evokes such a powerful reaction is very surprising, at first. But it is not the same for each individual and there is always something new to be learned from the experience for those who have done this walk many times.
