Lorna Cahall's -The Actor King

Lorna's vivid and energetic storytelling transports us to the 2nd century world of adventure and intrigue. The colorful characters carry us right along with them as they travel from Antioch to Alexander. I am even convinced that Tullius would let me tag along with his troupe to perform some minor part!

I wrote The Actor King to revisit the amazing world of the ancient Mediterranean at the beginning of the 2nd century A.D.  It seemed to me to resemble our era in many fascinating ways. Instead of our modern technological culture, there existed the vast Roman Empire, like us, at its peak, with hundreds of cults, traditions and religions. Rome encompassed the heritage of Greece, the Hellenistic libraries, and unbelievable prosperity that stood next to abject poverty. And there was that hint of an uncontrollable, irrational tide starting to turn against it all.

On the other hand, when we visit the ancient world we are indeed strangers, time travelers, who must struggle to understand the alien details of daily life.

The characters in The Actor King find ways to pull together, despite their diversity, under the leadership of the young , brilliant bunbling Tullius. As they each make their way to Alexandria, they struggle against horrible odds, overcome their prejudices, love, and ultimately learn that their common humanity is their greatest gift.

"The Actor King" is such an inventive novel--full of entertaining characters and information, and all especially interesting to me since we had visited Egypt about 15 years ago. I was interested in knowing that Alexandria was such an international city during the second century. I liked your characters. Tullius was very believable as and early, charismatic Laurence Oliver. What I think I liked best is that your people really liked each other, that collectively they had a sense of humor and the book is about friendships as much as place. Refreshing! I'll be looking forward to reading the sequel....
