Signs

O.B. Reily Road makes a steep curve as it drops
through ages of Oregon geology to cross the Tumalo River.
All along the rapid descent boulders break off,
undermined by the loss of their supporting layers.
Midway down, to the left, a pocket of vertically fluted sand
swings off, creating a wide place to rest. There
lovers come and carelessly inscribe their names
in sandy hearts. The frail sand and tiny river rocks
drip down relentlessly under the force of light winds.
Every year new names appear,
every year they are blown away.
Maybe someone should put up a sign.

Lorna Cahall earned an MA in art history and ancient history and studied the fascinating images of women's ritual left by ancient artists. She believes that much of women's spiritual and intellectual history has been lost to us. Only in the last few decades have scholars begun to try and sort out the real place of women in the ancient world. She has written manuals and given workshops on labyrinths, women's studies, and the goddess. Cahall is writing A Fish in the Dust, sequel to The Actor King.
