Three Labyrinth Walks for the Dark of Moon

The Moon's Gate is Closing.
Everyone is preparing
for the darkness.
Octopuses bang heads,
gently as kittens,
and the mermaids lean back
against their rocky seats
and close their eyes.

The ocean, the moon...such lovers.

1. Humility

The dark moon will rise in early morning.

Carry a smooth black stone
the whole time. The first walk
has tiny lights along the way
— the dark must enfold and touch you.
It will tear away the ego, social status,
visual body —take you to the bone.

Invite it to wrap around you and begin.

Darkness is a sign of the inner world
you can never fully know or master.
The left leading path is the walk into
the mystery, you ask humbly for help
from the darkness. You release, as well as you can,
the objects you cling to. Keep letting go.
For the dying, it initiates into a gentle death.
For those continuing, it clarifies.

The right turn brings your helpers, your angels.
Sense them and thank them. Ask them if they will
go with you on your journey to the center.
Your truth is that you are both mortal and eternal.
Hold both in your arms as two beautiful twins
of your being. You will walk left and right over
and over until you arrive at the center.

In the center, release all your images.
Focus on your breath. Simply be there,
it is enough. Walk back aware of each step.
When you arrive at the entrance,
turn and, holding the stone in your hand,
offer your prayer of gratitude.

2. Mourning and Release

She died reaching for something
she'll never have —yet, here she is, in every sorrowful part of my body. I walk to give her love and let her go.

From and for all the millions whose lives
were filled with pain, take one name,
write it carefully on a piece of paper.

Walking to the right, "I give you love with all my heart"—
going to the left, "I release you with all my body."
Each turn balances the two intentions together.

At the center, a fire to burn the name.
"You follow your path, I follow mine.
We are separate."  Thank the fire.

Focus on your breath. Simply be there,
it is enough. Walk back aware of each step.
When you arrive at the entrance,
turn and place your hands in the Mukula Mudra, all fingers together, pointing upward, a sign of a new beginning.

3. The Alpha and Omega

In the center of the labyrinth,
a bright candle, a clear
bowl of water, a soft cloth.
Wet a line on your forehead
place dust across that line.

This is the end and the beginning.

Let the darkness wrap you
like a lover. it knows your secrets,
it will fill you with your new life.
Walk as Inanna, the morning star,
as she was, for a time, at one completely
with the earth. Walk slowly, you are not afraid.

At the center is the water of compassion.
Wipe the dirt from your forehead.
Thank the water and the cloth.
Return as a child, free and aware.

Tomorrow the moon will split
the darkness with its light.
